When asked what the three in "John 3:16" stands for,
only about two out of three American adults could identify
it as the third chapter of the Gospel of John. It used to be
that even people outside of the church were still familiar
with most language used in the Church and basic ideas such
as chapters and verses in the Bible. Today, the landscape
has changed, as seen in the example above. When you speak to
people outside the Church, does the Gospel get lost in your
language? How can your congregation and its people speak and
write in such a way that will be faithful to the truth yet
able to be understood by those unfamiliar with basic
Christian concepts and ideas?
