From the IDW Personal Missions Committee
Among the four prominent generations of American adults,
at least 33% (age 64+) and as many as 56% (under age 25) of
individuals believe that the Bible, the Quran, and the Book
of Mormon contain the same spiritual truths. Do you know
what differentiates Christianity in general, and Lutheranism
in particular, from the things taught in these other
religious writings? Could you articulate the difference in a
conversation with an unbeliever? The Apostle Peter instructs
us to “always be prepared to give a reason to anyone who
asks for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15). The Gospel
of Jesus is unlike any religious path or spiritual truth
because it centers on what He has done for us rather than
what we must do for Him. This is the reason Christians
possess a hope that the world can neither achieve nor
understand.
CELEBRATIONS AND COMMENDATIONS
-
The 29th annual Lutheran Summer
Music Academy (LSM) took place at Luther College in
Decorah, Iowa from June 20 to July 18. Three
participants from Iowa District West were among the 149
students accepted into the program. Congratulations to
Jocelyn and Laura Hansen of Trinity, Odebolt and Sarah
Nolte of Faith, Winterset. LSM 2011 will mark the
program’s 30th anniversary and will be held June 26 to
July 24 at Luther College. For more information visit
www.lutheransummermusic.org.
RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES
-
Caring congregations have the
opportunity to direct qualifying families to the free
and reduced rate health care of the “hawk-i” coverage
provided through the Department of Human Services of the
State of Iowa. September 19 is “Cover the Kids” day
where information is shared and applications are
provided. Contact your local DHS office for more
information.
-
Students may have graduated from high
school but they haven’t graduated form the need to be
nurtured by the Word and ministered to by the
congregation. Congregations are encouraged to keep in
contact with young adults, to regularly pray for them
and to connect with them with a Lutheran ministry on
campus or in the community.
-
Christ the King, Spencer invites us to
the “Christ or Caricature” Seminar to be held on
Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the church. The presenter
will be Dr. Paul Maier, synodical vice president and
professor at Western Michigan University. Additional
information is included with this “Monthly.”
